Amid the High-Tech of CEID, Coppersmith Demonstrates Centuries-Old Craft

Not far from the laser cutters and 3D printers of the Center for Engineering Innovation and Design, a seventh-generation master coppersmith gave a presentation of his craft Thursday.

Bhalchandra Kadu, part of the Tambat caste that goes back generations, demonstrated the techniques of coppersmithing as they’re practiced in his home city of Pune, India. Kadu was accompanied by Professor Prasad Boradkar of Arizona State University. Together, they have been conducting research on the tradition of making copper utensils and other items from the Pune region.

CEID Summer Fellows Create Website to Narrow Healthcare Gap

SpokenMed, an informational healthcare website developed as part of the Center for Engineering Innovation and Design Summer Fellowship, is up and running and seeking contributors.

The website, developed by students Tiwa Lawal, Joyce Guo and Dhiksha Balaji, serves as a forum and online resource where members of different cultural groups can connect with other people in their community to discuss a broad range of concerns, questions, and experiences. SpokenMed empowers patients of populations that are often left behind in the healthcare system to take the initiative in their health. The information discussed and provided on SpokenMed is information particular to different minorities and cultural groups, but rarely found on other hospital websites. The goal is to reduce healthcare disparities by connecting people and providing more information.

A Device for Collecting Data in the Developing World

Recent graduates Gordon McCambridge and Tayo Ajayi are planning the next steps for a data-collecting device they created as part of the Center for Engineering Innovation and Design summer fellowship.

Their invention is a low-cost data-monitoring device with cell phone capability that can send via text message information from the field based on various sensor inputs, such as the temperature and position of vaccines en route.

CEID Fellows Take Their Asteroid Sampler To NASA

CEID Summer Fellows Michael Cruciger and Nafeesa Khan demonstrated a trigger-actuated rock sampler at today's Summer Fellowship Final presentations. The device, developed over the past several weeks, will be brought to Houston, TX as part of the NASA’s Micro-g NExT program. Read more about the presentation in the Yale SEAS news bulletin below:

Next stop: Bringing a literary train to life with a 3D printer

Incorporating French Literature in a Makerspace: When readers describe the experience of a great novel, they might say the story “leaps off the page.” But for assistant professor of French Morgane Cadieu, that phrase took on new meaning last fall when she and three of her students set out to create a 3D-printed train based entirely on descriptions from Emile Zola’s 1890 novel “La Bête humaine” (“The Beast Within”).

Engineering Makes Scents at Yale

It was an aromatic two hours at the Center for Engineering Innovation and Design when guests came to “engineer” a unique scent for themselves or their Valentine during the “Engineering Makes Scents at Yale” event on Feb. 13. Various mixable fragrances were available, including such unusual options as Columbian coffee beans, and participants carried their concoctionshome in a specially designed Yale fragrance flask.

At the intersection of engineering and music, Yale students hit the right notes

Yale students design their own instruments in the CEID's newest class Musical Acoustics & Instrument Design.

Co-taught by Konrad Kaczmarek and Larry Wilen the class combines elements of engineering, innovation, music, and art to provide an uniquely hands on experience. Almost all of the coursework revolves exclusively around the design and creation of musical instruments.

3D printing at Yale is a sight to behold

A 3D printer is sort of like a magic box, fueled by ingenuity.

Load it with data and presto! Out pops a kneecap. Or a bike chain. Or a brain.

At Yale University, where students, faculty and researchers are flocking to the technology by the hundreds, 3D printers are filtering into nearly every discipline on campus. They’re accelerating innovation, enhancing design projects and sparking inspiration for engineers, medical researchers, architects and biologists.

From knee to neuron, offspring of Yale's 3D printers multiply

Yale neuroscientist Gordon Shepherd has studied neurons for decades. But until recently he'd never had a neuron he could grasp with his own two hands: Neurons are much too small.

Now he's got his very own 3D neuron in all its spidery glory, a vastly enlarged but precise replica that is the latest custom-made anatomical model to emerge from the Yale Center for Engineering Innovation and Design (CEID). The model neuron is believed to be the first made with a 3D printer.
