STUDENT GROUPS
Extracurriculars are a key part of the CEID's activities. Student-led, student-driven extracurricular projects delve deep into design, project planning and fabrication. See below for a listing of clubs and organizations that work in the CEID studio, and click through the links for additional descriptions and contact information for each:
STUDENT CLUBS
Bulldogs Racing: Bulldogs Racing provides an opportunity to develop real-world engineering skills through automotive technology. The team designs and builds a formula-style car to race in the Formula Hybrid International competition held annually by the Society of Automotive Engineers.
Design for America: DFA is an organization that seeks to bring real-world design problems into the hands of university students. At DFA Yale, we work on projects using a human-centered design process to affect change and create impact.
Design and Innovation, SOM: Our mission is to educate and empower Yale SOM students to apply innovation processes and design thinking to business challenges and catalyze innovative solutions through practice, educational sessions, and career resources.
Engineers without Borders: EWB is a non-profit humanitarian organization established to partner with developing communities worldwide in order to improve their quality of life. This partnership involves the implementation of sustainable engineering projects, while involving and training internationally responsible engineers and engineering students.
Float: Float offers web design and programming classes to anyone at Yale interested. We aim to bring more girls interested in technology and entrepreneurship into the Yale community.
HackYale: HackYale is a student-driven lecture series offering workshops and classes on entrepreneurship and technical development to the Yale community.
iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine Foundation): The iGEM Competition challenges teams of students from universities around the world to design and implement a synthetic biology project and present their results in a juried competition in November of each year.
InVē (Yale Undergraduate Intelligent Vehicles): InVē gives Yale students the opportunity to design and build fully autonomous vehicles for the annual international Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition.
Project Bright: Project Bright is a student organization seeking to promote the use of solar energy, especially at Yale. We empower students with the knowledge necessary to participate in solar panel installations and educate others about solar’s economic and environmental advantages.
Yale Drop Team: The Yale Drop Team is undergraduate organization that conducts microgravity experiments in conjunction with NASA. Contact: charlotte.guertler@gmail.com
Yale Entrepreneurial Society: YES is a completely undergraduate-student-run and independent 501(c)3 non-profit corporation dedicated to promoting entrepreneurship and innovation in the greater Yale community. YES coordinates and supports educational resources, seed capital, and networking and mentorship opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs to bring Yale ideas and innovations into the world and create dynamic new ventures that contribute to the revitalization of New Haven. YES’s principal initiatives include our annual Yale Venture Challenge competition, our regional conferences, Yale’s business publication the Yale Entrepreneur, and our New Haven High Schools Entrepreneurship Initiative.
YaleMakes promotes maker culture and entrepreneurship through free weekly workshops on physical, digital, and graphical design, as well as larger events featuring professional designers.
Yale Rover Association: YURA engineers design and build a Mars Rover for the University Rover Challenge in Hanksville, Utah. We use a multidisciplinary approach to solve problems, focus on teamwork and are largely self-funded.
YUAA (Yale Undergraduate Aerospace Association): YUAA is an entirely student-run undergraduate organization at Yale College dedicated to progress in air and space innovation. Every year, the YUAA plans, designs, and launches several aerospace engineering projects, in addition to hosting speakers and other aerospace-related events on the Yale campus.
Yale Undergraduate Robotics: Yale Undergraduate Robotics is an organization where undergraduates plan and develop robotics projects involving hardware ranging from a quadrotor helicopter to the Microsoft Kinect to Android smartphones. YUR also aims to promote robotics on campus by developing student-faculty ties and hosting speaker events.
Yale Undergraduate Energy Club: The Yale Undergraduate Energy Club offers students interested in energy the opportunity to learn more. Through our weekly meetings, travel opportunities, speaker events, and special classes, we help students from diverse academic backgrounds gain a multidisciplinary understanding of different energy issues.
ENGINEERING HONORS SOCIETIES
ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers): ASME at Yale provides a sense of community for students of mechanical engineering. The chapter serves to arrange member events, such as community outreach; field trips to local industry; guest speakers; and workshops, including those related to the pursuit of higher education and career building.
AIChE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers): The Yale student chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers sponsors activities focused on the technical interests of its members and professional opportunities for beginning engineers. Members also participate in activities sponsored by the New Haven professional chapter. Membership is open to undergraduates enrolled in any engineering program.
BMES (Biomedical Engineering Society): BMES at Yale University is a student-led society that was organized in 2002. We are a college chapter of the international BMES association, and our primary goal is to enhance student awareness of the biomedical engineering field. We also function as a support network for students within the major.
IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers): With more than 300,000 members worldwide, IEEE is the largest professional organization of its kind. The Y-IEEE involves students and faculty. It maintains a student lounge with project components, Sun workstations, and a reference library. Activities include bi-weekly meetings, design projects, a student-run Internet, social gatherings, and speakers.
NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers): The National Society of Black Engineers seeks to increase the number of black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and have a positive impact on the community. The Yale chapter, founded in 1992, coordinates events on campus and attends NSBE-sponsored workshops on academic excellence, professional development, and networking with representatives from major corporations and NSBE members from other colleges.
SWE (Society of Women Engineers): SWE is the driving force that establishes engineering as a highly desirable career aspiration for women. SWE empowers women to succeed and advance in those aspirations and to be recognized for their life-changing contributions and achievements as engineers and leaders.
Tau Beta Pi: Founded in 1885, Tau Beta Pi (TBP) is the country’s pre-eminent engineering honor society, and Yale’s Connecticut Alpha chapter of TBP is one of the oldest in the nation. Besides being the most socially popular – yet least socially controversial! – Greek letter organization on campus, Connecticut Alpha also works extensively on issues ranging from professional development and networking to engineering education and social outreach.
