Engineering Heart Tissue

Jonas Schwan and Thomas Ryan of the Campbell Laboratory are using the CEID to create a new system for growing artificial heart tissue. Naturally-derived scaffolding material is cut on the laser cutter into specific geometries and then populated with immature cardiac cells using a custom seeding device. After seeding, the cells are cultured under precise mechanical conditions to study biological response to loads. Mature tissue is then tested using an apparatus 3D printed at the CEID.
